| Incidental observations on the population structure and movement patterns of the white sharks in South Africa have raised a number of questions relating to residency periods, spatial distribution, migratory patterns and the level of sociality in the white shark. This research program involves Placing upwards of 40 RCODE acoustic pingers on the white sharks in South Africa. Used in conjunction with VR1, VR2 bottom receivers, we will be able to simultaneously track the movement of these sharks around the coast of South Africa for upwards of a year and unravel many of these fascinating questions. From June 22nd to the 29th the research team, including Ryan Johnson, Mike Meyer, Micheal Scholl, Mike Patterson, Deon Kotze and Stefan Swanson, undertook a white shark research expedition to Mossel Bay, South Africa. During the five days of chumming 79 individual white sharks were observed allowing us to effectively "pick and choose" which 19 sharks we would place transmitters onto. Males are less frequently observed than females, but despite this we were able to place transmitters on three males, including a 400 - 450cm individual. Three sharks below 300cm in length were also tagged, while at the other extreme a transmitter was attached to a sexually mature female measuring between 550-600cm. This first phase of the program aims to investigate residency periods, social groupings and localized hotspots of white sharks within the bay. The second phase of the project, which will begin next year (2002), will involve placing the receivers at white shark "hotspots" along the entire coast of South Africa. This is aimed at investigating the migratory patterns of our white sharks and to see if social groupings are maintained over a larger spatial and temporal scale. This programme is funded by the World Wildlife Fund, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and supported by Marine and Coastal Management. |
